An Overall Relfection

For my fifth bonus blog I am going to reflect on what I have learned throughout my general blog topic, “Physical Disabilities” and what I have learnt from my groups blogs about this topic as well as our presentation. The proper terminology for a person with disabilities is people with disabilities because the PERSON should come before the disability. A general definition of a person with disabilities is a person who has a physical impairment, which has a substantial and long term effect on their abilities to carry out day to day activities. Someone with a moderate physical disability would have mobility problems. Our group focused on people who have different hardships facing daily life in different situations. Examples are people with disabilities through education or the workplace, women with disabilities, veterans with disabilities, accommodating people with disabilities in different settings and aboriginals with disabilities. Each example can be looked at through each of the ideologies we have taken a look at through our class lectures such as the neoconservative, liberal, indigenous, social democracy or Marxist lenses.

Through education a person with disabilities can have a large variety of needs and a school needs to accommodate these people properly so that they can engage in school activities as well as in the workplace. People may require an assistant or special technology in order to function daily. Through the work place a person with disabilities needs to find a job that suites their needs or that they are qualified for. A program that helps a person with disabilities create their own jobs, doing what they love is the Entrepreneurs with Disabilities Program. Many people underestimate the abuse that comes along with women with disabilities. Throughout our presentation showed the statistics that show the amount of women with disabilities who are abused, sexually assaulted or victimized. These people may have lack of access to support services in order to get help due to mobility, cognitive or communication impairments. A women with disabilities help line is the assaulted women’s help line. Many people with disabilities are unaware of the programs or services that can help them with any situation. Veterans aid is underestimated in terms of disabilities. There are many post war veterans with disabilities who feel unappreciated by the government because they are not receiving the proper care or services they believe that they should. For years they have been cutting back on veterans pensions and disability services, through one of my blogs I note few of the stories that have been posted in articles that show they are not receiving daily tools (for example a lift to get in and out of the bath tub) they need to live their life. A program that has been created is Helmets to Hard Hat’s which aids ex soldiers to get into the construction industry, a good service for those who are physically able. Those who are disabled may have problems financially and are not able to get the tools they need because they cannot work; the government is not helping with their cut backs on pensions. Although the conservatives are trying to end these claw backs on veterans who are disabled as of last month there will still be many hardships faced.

Throughout the entire classes blog posts there has been many programs I have been unaware of and believe that many people who could use the services are unaware of the many programs that could help them. The issues that I have overseen throughout my groups blog I have also been unaware of. I have learned a lot throughout this social welfare class and have learned the ability to compare the ideologies with these certain topics. I have enjoyed this class because by doing the blogs I have found real articles that show realities of this course. I have learned many different concepts and terms through this course and by doing the blogging assignment have been able to relate the concepts to every day realities in the world today.
